History of the Hospital in BonhamThe first step that eventually led to the construction of a hospital in Bonham came on April 28, 1968. It was on that date that the Fannin County Commissioners court, after receipt of a study on the needs for a modern hospital facility in the county officially formed the Fannin County Hospital authority, which would have the authority to move ahead with plans for financing, construction and operation. With the formation of the Hospital Authority, the Commissioners court named nine residents of Fannin county to serve as directors of the authority. The first step came with the approval by the Texas Legislature of a measure establishing a Fannin County Hospital District. On September 16, 1969, the court called an election for October 25 in which the residents of Fannin county would be asked to authorize the establishment of a hospital district which would have the authority to issue bonds and levy a tax sufficient to retire the proposed issue. In the period of time between the naming of the board of directors of the district and the calling of the election, the board was advised that a grant in the amount of $1,000,000 had been approved to help meet the costs of construction of the facility. However, voters of the county rejected the proposal to organize the hospital district with authority to issue bonds and levy a tax and the hospital initiative appeared to be headed for failure. Members of the board and others interested in seeing that modern medical facilities be provided in the county, kept working and decided to go ahead, make use of the grant, raise a minimum of $350,000 from donations by private individuals, businesses, industries and foundations. Funds were raised in a short period of time; the goal was reached and exceeded as more than $400,000 was pledged to aid the construction. Originally the construction included two complete floors and a third floor shell which would be completed at a later date when the demand grew and finances were available. The two floors would provide 65 beds and an additional 32 beds would be provided by the third floor. This was the beginning of the Fannin County Hospital. In the mid-nineties the third floor was opened for the operation of the Skilled Nursing Facility. In December 2005 the hospital applied for, and was awarded, a Critical Access Hospital designation in addition to already being a JCAHO accredited facility. Only a month later, the name was changed from Northeast Medical Center to Red River Regional Hosptial. In March of 2008, RRRH was purchased by a board of investors and became locally owned. RRRH offers a fully staffed 24-hour emergency room, ICU, medical/surgical unit, mammography, nuclear medicine, fluoroscopy, cardio pulmonary, and an outpatient specialty clinic. Diagnostics are available through CT services, ultrasound, MRI and laboratory. There is also a rehabilitation department that provides in-patient and out-patient services for physical therapy, occupational therapy and cardiac patients. In addition, physician specialties include Family Practice, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Gynecology, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiology, Radiology, Pathology, Urology, and Neurology. Since 1972, when the hospital opened, Red River Regional Hospital has made great strides to provide safe, high-quality health care in a family-oriented environment. The administrative staff and employees invite the community to come see the changes that are occurring currently with the hospital. |
